Het wordt tegenwoordig als synoniem gebruikt voor het 8-weken programma MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) of MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy), waarover inmiddels vele boeken geschreven zijn. De wortels van het 8-weken programma mindfulness liggen echter in de eeuwenoude kennis van het boeddhisme. Ook hierover &#8211; mindfulness als deel van deze oude oosterse wijsheid &#8211; is veel in de literatuur te vinden. Hier is mindfulness ingebed\u00a0 in een veel groter kennis- en leergebied over de werking van ons bewustzijn.<\/p><p>Mindfulness is niet alleen iets wat je je cognitief eigen maakt. Het is ook een beoefening om je aandacht te trainen. De vormen waarin de meditaties en contemplaties worden aangeboden zijn daarbij heel divers, afhankelijk van de achtergrond, waaruit ze voortkomen. Voor degene, die zich op mindfulness wil ori\u00ebnteren kan dat nogal verwarrend zijn. De eerste soort mindfulness &#8211; die zijn wortels heeft in de boeddhistische psychologie &#8211; is als een oeroude boom, die vele vertakkingen heeft gekregen door de eeuwen heen. Er ontstonden leringen rondom mindfulness die in elk land en in elke cultuur zich weer aanpasten aan de gegeven omstandigheden.<\/p><p>De tweede soort mindfulness kun je zien als een van de laatste takken aan de boom van deze oeroude boeddhistische wijsheidsleer. Je zou deze vorm van mindfulness kunnen beschouwen als de meest recente ontwikkeling op het gebied van meditatie waarbij mindfulness passend werd gemaakt voor onze tijdsgeest in onze westerse maatschappij.
