Maar onder de stressvolle gedachte zit veel meer, ook al zijn we hier meestal niet van bewust. Er is namelijk een koppeling tussen stressvolle gedachte, onaangenaam gevoel en een onaangename lichamelijke spanning. Dezelfde lichamelijke spanning zorgt dan opnieuw voor bezorgde of stressvolle gevoelens en gedachten. Als we ons hiervan niet bewust worden dan blijft dat maar doorgaan in een eindeloze cirkel van stressvolle gedachten, vervelende emoties en nare lichaamsspanningen. Dat kan een simpele afkeurende blik zijn, of een loze opmerking van een collega, het afzeggen van een afspraak of een andere trigger. De oudste delen van onze hersenen, de hersenstam en het limbisch systeem &#8211; komen in staat van paraatheid. Het limbisch systeem tast onze omgeving af op veiligheid of onveiligheid. De amygdala, die deel is van het emotionele brein in het limbische systeem, geeft in een splitsecond signalen van gevaar af naar het lichaam (vluchten, vechten of bevriezen). Deze reacties staan niet onder invloed van onze neocortex \u2013 ons bewuste en denkende vermogen &#8211; en zijn dus ook niet te corrigeren door gedachten of overwegingen. Het \u2018overkomt\u2019 ons. Daarna geeft de amygdala waarschuwingssignalen aan de neocortex. De neocortex produceert &#8211; gevoed vanuit de informatie dat er gevaar is &#8211; weer nieuwe stressvolle gedachten. Dat veroorzaakt weer lichaamsspanningen en negatieve emotionele reacties. En zo herhaalt en verdiept zich de cyclus van stress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-5585-2-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" >\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<p>Mensen die lijden aan depressie of chronische vermoeidheid zitten zonder onderbreking in deze cyclus en lijden onder een amygdala die voortdurend \u2018gevaar\u2019 signaleert.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"pg-5585-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" >\n<div id=\"pgc-5585-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\"  data-weight=\"1\" >\n<div id=\"panel-5585-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\" >\n<div class=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\">\n<h3 class=\"widget-title\">De amygdala kalmeren door adem en bewuste aandacht<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n<p>Als je een stressvolle gedachte denkt en dan met je aandacht naar je adem gaat is de stresscyclus al doorbroken. De hersenstam gaat door de aandacht voor de adem ontspannen, de amygdala krijgt signalen dat het weer veilig wordt en het gevaar afneemt. We zijn dan meestal ook tot een aantal inzichten gekomen, een teken van neurale integratie tussen onze verschillende hersendelen. Tot onze verbazing kunnen we dan na een tijdje de oorspronkelijke stressvolle gedachte denken zonder dat die ons stress oplevert. Dat kunnen we voor onze eigen meditatiebeoefening goed gebruiken. Maar het is ook een kernachtige werkvorm bij een mindful coachgesprek.<\/p>\n<p>\nStap 1: De coachee kiest een stressvolle gedachte waarmee zij in deze oefening wil werken. B.v. \u2018Ik voel me niet begrepen\u2019. Vraag vervolgens hoe stressvol de gedachte is op een schaal van 0 tot 10. Tien betekent maximale stress.<\/p>\n<p>\nStap 2: Nodig nu eerst de coachee uit om in een comfortabele houding te zitten. Neem de tijd om samen met de coachee armen, benen en het hele lichaam te voelen. Adem samen enkele keren diep in en uit. Zorg ervoor dat de coachee contact heeft met een stabiele, prettige of veilige plek in haar lijf. Als die plek duidelijk aanwezig is dan kun je beginnen.<\/p>\n<p>\nStap 3: De coach zegt: Terwijl ik mijn adem voel\u2026en vraagt de coachee om dit te herhalen\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stap 4: De coach: \u2026neem ik waar\u2026de coachee herhaalt dit\u2026 en vult de zin aan met de stressvolle gedachte b.v.: neem ik waar wat de gedachte met me doet \u2018ik voel me niet begrepen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stap 5: De coach: Voel opnieuw je adem &#8211; drie tot 5 ademhalingen lang &#8211; terwijl je je bewust bent van de gedachte \u2018ik voel me niet begrepen\u2019. En na enkele ademhalingen, vraag je: Wat gebeurt er nu in je lijf en waarneming? De coachee beschrijft nu haar\/zijn waarneming.<\/p>\n<p>En dan opnieuw vanaf stap 3.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stap 3 tot 5 herhaal je steeds weer. Bij stap 4 ga je nu niet met de stressvolle gedachte verder maar met de meest opvallende waarnemingen die je hier en nu ervaart. ( b.v. \u2026neem ik waar, dat mijn keel samenknijpt).
